Briefly about the species

White peafowl (Pavo cristatus) - a leucistic morph of the Indian peafowl with fully white plumage and usually blue irides. Biology and behavior match the species: males reach 2.0-2.3 m in total length with train, body mass 4-6 kg; females are smaller and lighter. The morph arose in domesticated lines and retains diurnal activity, ground-oriented habits and pronounced courtship displays. IUCN status for the species - Least Concern (LC).

Husbandry conditions

White peafowl thrive in a dry, spacious aviary of 15-20 m² per pair with 2.5-3 m height, perches, shelters from wind and precipitation, and firm bedding. Because white feathers soil easily, provide shade, a roofed area and good drainage to avoid wetting and staining. In winter, use a sheltered house at 0-5 °C without drafts and with reliable ventilation and predator-proof entry (e.g., double-door vestibule).

Feeding

White peafowl are omnivorous. Base diet: 40-50 % grain mix, complete pellets for pheasants/peafowl, greens, vegetables, plus animal-protein sources. Provide mineral supplements and shell grit year-round, small gravel for gizzard function, and always fresh water. Chicks need higher protein and more frequent feeding; adults require energy control off-season to maintain body condition.

Breeding and health

White peafowl follow the species' phenology: breeding in spring, with males courting and potentially maintaining several females. Typical clutch 3-6 eggs; incubation 27-30 days at 37.5 °C and 55-60 % humidity. Brooder start for chicks 32-35 °C with a 2-3 °C weekly step-down. Maintain coccidiosis prevention, deworming per farm protocol, aviary sanitation, and trim the train if required for hygiene.

FAQ

How is a white peafowl different from an albino?

White peafowl is a leucistic morph of Indian peafowl: plumage is white due to reduced feather pigmentation, while irides are usually blue. True albinism features red eyes and additional traits.

What is the minimum aviary size for a pair?

Recommended minimum is 15-20 m² per pair with 2.5-3 m height, plus shade and roofed areas to keep white feathers clean and dry.

Do white peafowl tolerate cold climates?

They tolerate moderate cold given a dry shelter; in winter provide a draft-free house at about 0-5 °C.

How long is incubation and what are the parameters?

Incubation lasts 27-30 days at 37.5 °C and 55-60 % humidity, with hatching adjustments per farm protocol.
