Species description
Bronzewing pigeons (genus Phaps) are Australian pigeons from the family Columbidae; the genus name derives from Ancient Greek φάψ — “wild pigeon.” The group’s common name comes from the characteristic “bronze” sheen of red, green, and blue on the wing. They are medium-sized, compact birds; males often show a pale-yellow spot on the forehead and a gentle pink wash on the breast. The genus includes three species: the brush bronzewing, the bronzewing “harlequin,” and the bronzewings in the strict sense.
Range and habitat
Endemic to Australia and Tasmania. They occur across most dry and semi-arid habitats of the continent, and in wooded and agro-landscapes where water is available. They avoid extremely arid zones and continuous, dense tropical forests without access to water.
Diet
The diet is dominated by seeds of wild grasses and other plant matter gathered mainly on the ground — along woodland edges, pastures, and field margins.
Behavior
Usually seen singly or in pairs, less often in small flocks. Wary and skittish; when disturbed they quickly open distance or take a short, rapid flight to cover in shrubs.

Frequently Asked Questions
What housing conditions are suitable?
A spacious, dry aviary with shelters and perches, shade, and constant access to clean water. Grain-based feeds with added greens work well.
Can they be kept with other pigeons?
Yes, if space and multiple feeders are provided. During the breeding period it’s best to keep pairs separately to reduce stress.
