Description of the species

The black-shouldered peafowl is a decorative morph of the Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus). It is characterized by black shoulder coverts and a darker underside while retaining the classic blue and green tones on the head, neck and back. It does not occur as a separate subspecies in the wild and is maintained mainly in parks and collections.

Origin

This morph originated in India through selective breeding of P. cristatus. It does not establish wild populations; distribution is via breeders, parks and private farms.

Range and habitat

Due to hardiness and ornamental value, black-shouldered peafowl are kept worldwide. They are typically associated with human landscapes such as parks, temple grounds and garden estates that offer shelter and access to water.

Plumage and sexual dimorphism

The key trait is the black shoulder area and darker underparts, with the head, neck, back and train showing the familiar blue and green of the Indian peafowl. Hens are less vivid and lack the extravagant train, showing more brown tones with lighter areas on the throat and chest.

Diet

Omnivorous. In managed care, feed a quality pheasant ration supplemented with grain mixes, fresh greens, fruits and vegetables, with animal protein sources as needed. Clean water must be available at all times and feeds should be fresh and mold free.

Breeding and lifespan

In captivity multiple courtship peaks per season are possible. Clutches commonly contain 8-13 eggs. Sexual dimorphism becomes evident in the second year with sexual maturity. With good husbandry, lifespan can extend to several decades.

Symbolism

Peafowl are long associated with majesty and beauty and are often linked to temple complexes and ceremonial grounds in various cultures.
