Species description

The Crested Bronzewing (Ocyphaps lophotes) is an Australian pigeon from the family Columbidae that forms a monotypic genus, Ocyphaps. Body length is 30–34 cm. Plumage is grey with brownish-green hues; a thin black feathered “spike” crowns the head. The wings show black and bronzy bands, while the primaries can iridesce with brown, purple, blue and green tones. Males and females are alike; juveniles are duller and lack the bronze sheen on the wing.

Range and habitat

Widespread across mainland Australia except in tropical regions. Occupies small woodland clearings and edges, occurs along watercourses, on pastures, in home gardens and urban parks. The expansion of settlements and grazing lands has increased suitable habitats.

Breeding

Breeds nearly year-round, most often in warmer months. The male’s courtship involves body bobbing with wings fanned open and closed. A receptive female remains still and allows approach. The nest is a shallow stick platform in shrubs or trees. Clutches usually contain two glossy white oval eggs; incubation is ~3 weeks and shared by both parents.
