Description of the species

Swinhoe’s lophura, or Swinhoe’s pheasant (lat. Lophura swinhoii), is a bird species in the pheasant family. It is endemic to Taiwan and is sometimes cited as an unofficial national symbol because its plumage echoes the colors of the national flag. The species is named after the British naturalist Robert Swinhoe.

Males reach a total length of about 79 cm, of which 41-50 cm is the tail, with body mass up to 1110 g. Females are much smaller, up to 50 cm in total length with a 20-22 cm tail. The diet is diverse and includes acorns, berries, flower buds, leaves and other plant material, as well as earthworms, centipedes, and termites.

Range

The species inhabits mountains in central Taiwan, mainly broadleaf forests up to roughly 2000 m above sea level. By IUCN assessment it is Near Threatened. Major threats include deforestation; historically it also suffered from intensive hunting pressure.

Common questions

How does Swinhoe’s pheasant differ from silver and Lady Amherst’s pheasants?

Swinhoe’s pheasant is a Taiwanese endemic with a bold pattern and blue, red, and white accents. The silver pheasant shows a light-dark high-contrast “silvered” pattern, while Lady Amherst’s has a pronounced black-and-white ruff and a strongly barred tail.

Can several males be kept together?

Conflicts are likely in the breeding season, so keep males separately or provide a larger area with visual barriers.

What is the minimum temperature for keeping them?

They tolerate cold if the litter is dry and there is wind protection. In severe frosts, use insulated shelter and avoid dampness.

What should they be fed in captivity?

A pheasant/chicken grower feed works well, supplemented with greens and vegetables plus a seasonal animal-protein source. Provide mineral supplements and fresh water at all times.
