Description of the species
Reeves’s pheasant (lat. Syrmaticus reevesii) is a species in the pheasant family. Its scientific name honors the British naturalist John Reeves (1774-1856), who brought the first live male of this species to Europe in 1831.
Males reach a total length of up to 210 cm thanks to an exceptionally long tail of 100-160 cm (in rare cases up to 173 cm), with a mass up to 1529 g. Females are smaller, up to 150 cm in total length, with a 35-46 cm tail and a mass around 950 g. Plumage is dark brown overall; the head is black with a white cap and a wide white ring that runs from the throat to the nape. Wings are pale with black edging on the feathers; the belly and lower breast are dark brown. The tail shows alternating black and silvery-gray transverse bars. Legs are lead-gray, and the bill is light gray.
Range
Reeves’s pheasant inhabits mountain forests of central and northeastern China at elevations of about 300–1800 m above sea level, and is found less frequently in valleys and gorges. It favors deciduous forests—especially dense oak groves with modest undergrowth—as well as coniferous forests and shrublands. Birds may also forage along the margins of cultivated fields.
Diet
In autumn and winter the diet is dominated by acorns, rose hips, and cotoneaster berries. In the wild it is supplemented by seasonally available plant foods and small invertebrates.
Breeding
Clutches typically contain 7–15 eggs, ranging from yellowish to beige, with average dimensions around 46 × 37 mm. Incubation lasts about 24–25 days. In captivity the species can hybridize with certain other pheasants and produce viable offspring.

Common questions
How does Reeves’s pheasant differ from the golden pheasant?
Reeves’s pheasant has an extremely long, boldly barred tail and a high-contrast pattern with silvery-gray transverse bands, while the golden pheasant shows dominant bright golden and red tones with a different collar and crest.
Can several males be kept together?
Conflicts are likely in the breeding season, so keep males separately or provide a larger area with visual barriers.
What is the minimum temperature for keeping them?
They tolerate cold with dry litter and wind protection. In severe frosts, use insulated shelter and avoid damp conditions.
When does the male develop the characteristic long tail?
The tail feathers lengthen as the male matures and typically reach maximum length by the second year.
