Description of the species

The Chinese ring-necked parakeet (Psittacula derbiana), also called the Derbyan Parakeet, is a large ring-necked species about 40-50 cm long, up to ~28 cm of which is the tail. Base plumage is green. The forehead and lores are black, the crown has a bluish-black cast, and a broad black stripe runs from the lower mandible along the cheeks. The neck and chest are bluish gray. Tail coverts and upperside look bluish gray, the underside shows blue-green. Sexes differ by bill color: males have a red upper mandible with a black lower mandible, females have an all-black bill.

Range and habitat

Occurs in southwestern China, including southeastern Tibet, and adjacent parts of northeastern India. It inhabits tall tropical and montane forests up to about 4000 m above sea level.

Life and diet

Usually found in small flocks or family groups, spending most time high in the canopy. Diet includes seeds, fruits, nuts and vegetative plant parts. Contact calls are strong and carry well; birds move higher in the forest strata when alarmed.

Care in captivity

Intelligent and trainable. With a thick, very mobile tongue and keen hearing, many individuals imitate human speech and household sounds clearly. Provide a spacious aviary or large cage, several perches of varied diameter, safe enrichment toys, mineral supplements and daily interaction. Keep temperature stable without drafts and ensure constant access to fresh water.
