Species description

The monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus), also called the quaker or thick-billed parrot, is a gregarious South American species measuring 27-30 cm and weighing around 100 g. Plumage is predominantly green; the breast is pale greenish-gray with transverse green streaks, while the lower neck and foreface are gray. Wings are dark brown with blue primaries, the undertail is yellowish-green. The bill is strong, straw-colored, and deeply curved; iris brown. The tail is graduated and longer than the wing. Sexual dimorphism is weak - females are slightly smaller than males.

Range and habitat

Its native range covers Paraguay, northern Argentina, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. The species is successfully introduced in the USA and Europe, where it forms urban populations (parks, boulevards, power-line structures). In the wild it inhabits steppe and deciduous habitats, often on slopes up to ~1000 m above sea level.

Ecology and human interaction

Typically forms flocks of 200-500 birds. Adapts readily to human-shaped landscapes and can damage grain and fruit crops. In some EU cities it is listed as invasive with population control measures. Colonial stick nests in trees and on structures can become heavy, which is considered in urban greenspace management.

Breeding

The only parrot that routinely builds enclosed stick nests on branches and man-made structures. Colonial spherical complexes have multiple entrances and chambers and are reused. Typical clutch is 5-8 white eggs; incubation lasts 22-26 days. Fledging occurs at 6-7 weeks, and two clutches per season are possible in favorable years.

Husbandry

Active and vocal birds that require a spacious horizontal aviary/cage, daily enrichment, and a varied diet: seed mixes for medium parrots, sprouts, leafy greens, vegetables and fruit in moderation, browse (safe branches), mineral supplements, and constant access to fresh water. Typical lifespan is 15-30 years.

Taxonomy and subspecies

Includes three subspecies: M. m. monachus (SE Brazil, Uruguay, NE Argentina), M. m. calita (W and S Argentina), M. m. cotorra (SE Bolivia, Paraguay, N Argentina, S Brazil). The Bolivian form Myiopsitta luchsi is now treated as a separate species.
