Description of the species
The green peafowl (Pavo muticus) is one of the two Asian peafowl species, noticeably larger and brighter than the Indian peafowl. Plumage shows a strong metallic sheen; the legs, neck and crest are longer. Male dimensions: total length 180-300 cm, wing 46-54 cm, tail 40-47 cm, train 140-160 cm, mass up to ~5 kg. The head and upper neck are brownish green with a bluish gray orbital area. Lower neck feathers have a green, scale-like golden edging; breast and upper back are greenish blue with rufous and yellow mottling; shoulders and wings are dark green; primaries are brown with blackish gray spots. Rectrices are light chestnut, and the elongated coverts are bright with a copper-red metallic cast. Bill black, legs gray. Females are similar in color but smaller. The male’s call is quieter and less harsh than in the Indian peafowl.
Range and habitat
Native to Southeast Asia up to ~900 m elevation: Java, Indochina, NE India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, western Malaysia, Thailand and southern China. Prefers forest mosaics with edges, thickets and reliable water. In Europe and the Americas it was scarcely bred before the 20th century.
Threat status and conservation
Much less numerous than the Indian peafowl. Range and population declined sharply in the second half of the 20th century. Current global status per BirdLife International and the IUCN is Endangered. Principal threats include habitat loss, persecution and population fragmentation.
Classification and subspecies
Three subspecies of P. muticus are commonly recognized by plumage traits and geography:
- P. m. imperator - Indochinese green peafowl
- P. m. muticus - Javan green peafowl
- P. m. spicifer - Burmese green peafowl
National symbols
Since 1940 the Burmese subspecies (P. m. spicifer) has been recognized as a national symbol of Myanmar.

Common questions
How does the green peafowl differ from the Indian peafowl
It is larger with longer legs, neck and crest, and shows green-bronze metallic tones. The male’s call is quieter and less harsh. The Indian peafowl has a vivid blue neck and a different crest structure.
Can green and Indian peafowl be housed together
Possible in large, well-zoned aviaries, but for line purity and lower stress it is better to keep species separately.
What husbandry conditions are recommended
A spacious, dry aviary with high perches, shelter and shade, protected from drafts. Diet: quality pheasant feed, grain mixes, greens, fruits and mineral supplements, with constant access to clean water.
