Description of the species
The blue eared pheasant (lat. Crossoptilon auritum) is a large member of the pheasant family. Total length is typically about 96 cm or more. Plumage is grayish blue; the head shows a dark violet crown and a black cap, with a bright red bare facial patch. Long white “ear” tufts are prominent on both sides of the head. The bill and elongated neck feathers are white.
Range and habitat
Occurs in the montane forests of central China. It inhabits highland and foothill forest mosaics with edges and shrub belts, favoring slopes with open canopies and dense understory.
Ecology and diet
One of the largest and most high-elevation pheasants in China. Feeds mainly on plant matter and berries, foraging on the ground and within the understory.
Sexual dimorphism
Males and females look broadly similar: gray-blue plumage, a black cap, a bright red facial patch, and long white ear tufts. Sexual differences are subtle compared to “classic” pheasants.
