Description of the genus

Eared pheasants (Crossoptilon) are large, ground-oriented pheasants with elongated bodies and short, strong, spurred legs. The tail is soft, made up of 20-24 feathers, and looks brush-like. Plumage is mostly uniform in tone, with little to no sexual dimorphism, which is unusual among pheasants. Several species have characteristic feathered “ears.” Species’ ranges scarcely overlap.

Species

  • Crossoptilon harmani
  • White eared pheasant (Crossoptilon crossoptilon)
  • Manchurian or brown eared pheasant (Crossoptilon mantchuricum)
  • Blue eared pheasant (Crossoptilon auritum)

Range and habitat

The genus is centered in China and adjacent mountain regions of East Asia. Eared pheasants inhabit montane forests, subalpine shrub belts and forest edges at mid to high elevations, favoring slopes with open canopies and dense understory.

Husbandry

Provide spacious, dry aviaries with shrub cover, overhead shelter from rain, and windbreaks. Visual barriers between sections are advisable, especially during the breeding season.

Feeding

A pheasant grower base plus grain mixes, greens, berries and seeds; add an animal-protein source seasonally. Clean water and mineral supplements must be available at all times.

Common questions

How do eared pheasants differ from “classic” pheasants

They show minimal sexual dimorphism, have a soft brush-like tail, and several species bear feathered “ears.” Their behavior is more ground-dwelling and montane.

Can multiple species be housed together

Better to separate them into individual sections to prevent competition and potential hybridization. Visual barriers are essential during the display season.

What aviary area is recommended

From about 10-15 m² per pair, with tall perches, dense cover, and dry litter.
