Description of the species
The Lemon Pheasant is a selectively bred color morph of the golden pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus). Males show vivid yellow plumage with a long lemon crest and a bright hood. Females are modestly colored in pale yellowish tones with mottling, which provides better camouflage.
Appearance
Male. Long lemon-yellow crest, yellowish-orange hood, yellow back and underparts, patterned tail; total length with tail up to ~100 cm.
Female. Paler and more uniform, in light yellow to brownish-yellow shades with mottling; overall far less showy than the male.
Range and husbandry
Origin. The base species, the golden pheasant, is native to China. The lemon color is a captive line fixed by selection and is mainly found in aviculture.
Where kept. Private farms, decorative bird collections and zoos. For stable color and calm behavior, provide spacious, dry aviaries with cover and visual barriers.
Seasonal behavior. During the breeding season males can become aggressive - use separate pens or partitioned aviaries while they are in breeding condition.
Diet
In nature. Young shoots and leaves of shrubs and bamboo, flowers, and small invertebrates.
In captivity. Balanced grain mixes based on wheat and corn with additions of legumes and fresh greens; soft foods may be offered per farm standards. Fresh, clean water must be available at all times.

Common questions
How does the lemon morph differ from the classic golden pheasant
It is the same species (Chrysolophus pictus) with a selectively fixed lemon-yellow palette in males and paler tones in females. Behavior and husbandry needs are the same.
Can multiple males be housed together during the breeding season
Not recommended. Use separate pens or aviaries with visual partitions to reduce competition while males are in breeding condition.
What is a suitable base diet on the farm
A complete pheasant/galliform mix with added greens, vegetables and seasonal protein sources as appropriate. Provide clean water at all times.
