Description

Superb Parrot (Polytelis swainsonii)

The superb parrot - a member of the parrot family Psittaculidae, known for its bright coloration and elegant appearance. One of the striking Australian parrot species, popular among bird enthusiasts.

Appearance

Body length reaches 40 cm, tail 20-22 cm. Plumage is bright green. Throat, chin, cheeks, and forehead are yellow, with a wide red transverse stripe across the throat. Females have duller coloration and lack the red stripe on the throat. Beak is red or red-yellow, iris is orange.

Range

Native to Southeastern Australia, inhabiting forests and forest edges.

Lifestyle and Diet

Lives mainly in tree canopies, regularly visiting forest edges and garden areas. Feeds on seeds of wild and cultivated plants (nettle, shepherd's purse, thistle, geranium, wheat, alfalfa, etc.) as well as nectar from flowering eucalyptus trees.
