Description of the species

The Manchurian, or brown, eared pheasant (Crossoptilon mantchuricum) is a large ground-dwelling pheasant with the characteristic feather “ears” formed by elongated white feathers at the throat and ear region. The overall plumage is brown with a bluish-black sheen across the upper body, shoulders and wing coverts; the underparts show a grayish cast. Males have a glossy black head; females show a lighter brown head. The broad tail comprises 22 grayish-white rectrices with dark brown, sometimes purplish-blue, tips. The bill is heavy, yellowish at the base shading to reddish toward the tip. Legs are red, with small spurs in males; females lack spurs. Male length is about 100 cm with a ~54 cm tail; females are smaller.

Range and habitat

Historically found in western China and Inner Mongolia. It inhabits low-growing forests and shrublands with glades and streams on rocky mountains, including areas along remnants of the Great Wall west and north of Beijing. Formerly recorded from the southeast of Inner Mongolia to central Shanxi. Prefers mosaics of open-canopy woodland with dense understory.

Status and conservation

Due to land conversion and disturbance, the Manchurian eared pheasant has become exceptionally rare and is formally protected in China. Local populations are vulnerable to habitat fragmentation, human disturbance and poaching.
