Description of the species
Phasianus is the nominative genus of the tribe Phasianini within the subfamily Phasianinae, family Phasianidae. These are large, ground-dwelling galliform birds with pronounced sexual dimorphism: males are larger and more brightly colored than females, often with a metallic sheen. A distinguishing feature versus other pheasant genera is the bare ring of skin around the eye. Body length in large forms reaches ~86 cm, with mass around 1.7-2.0 kg.
Etymology
The name “pheasant” traces to the ancient city of Phasis on the river of the same name in Colchis. Tradition holds that the Argonauts brought these birds to Europe from there; the modern successor city is Poti.
Distribution
The natural range extends from Western and Central Asia eastward to China and Japan. Through introductions and acclimatization, pheasants have been widely established in parts of Europe and North America.
Life and diet
Pheasants live primarily on the ground in shrublands, woodland edges, riverine reedbeds, and field margins. They feed opportunistically on seeds, fruits, and green plant parts, as well as diverse invertebrates including mollusks, earthworms, spiders, woodlice, ants, beetles, cicadas, grasshoppers, and snails. They may also take small vertebrates such as mice, lizards, and juvenile snakes. Nests are on the ground and the hen alone raises the brood.
Classification
The genus Phasianus includes several forms, the best known being the Common or Ring-necked Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus), which comprises many geographic variants differing in size, pattern, and plumage tones.

Common questions
How do common pheasants differ from decorative pheasant species
Common pheasants are highly variable across subspecies and have a long history of introduction for game management. Decorative species are often smaller or patterned more vividly and are mainly kept in collections.
What housing is suitable on a smallholding
Spacious aviaries with cover, dry substrate, shade, and wind protection. Provide shelters, dense vegetation or privacy screens for security.
What is a good base diet in captivity
Complete pheasant or turkey feeds supplemented with grains, greens, vegetables, and seasonal animal protein. Mineral supplements and fresh water are essential.
