Species description
Decorative chicken breeds are groups of the domestic chicken Gallus gallus domesticus developed primarily for aesthetic and experimental purposes. Unlike utility lines, selection here focuses on exterior traits and unusual features, so egg and meat productivity are usually lower, and some breeds need more attentive care.
History
Decorative poultry keeping emerged as a second major direction after gamefowl. Such chickens adorned noble courtyards, served in rituals, and later became exhibition birds and striking features of private yards. Many ancient breeds originated in China, India, Indonesia and Japan, after which the fashion for ornamental chickens spread across Europe.
Distinctive traits and groups
Decorative breeds include lines with pronounced exterior features: crests, feathered shanks, long tails, tailless forms, silky plumage, frizzling, naked necks, thick shanks and more. Miniature bantam versions of standard breeds also belong here, as do lines with unusual feather colors and eggs in nonstandard color ranges.
Housing and care
To preserve decorative qualities, provide a dry clean coop, moderate stocking density, perches at varied heights, dust baths, and stress-free molting. Long-tailed and heavily feathered breeds need spacious clean flooring and sheltered, moisture-protected runs.
Feeding
The base diet is a complete feed by age plus greens, vegetables, and sources of calcium and trace minerals. Long-feathered and bantam lines are sensitive to excess energy intake – maintain body condition without obesity to support feather quality.
Breeding and health
Form pairs according to breed standards and avoid close relatedness. For show lines, strict selection and careful preparation of youngsters for the season are critical. Preventive care includes vaccinations per farm protocol, deworming, control of ectoparasites, and protection of plumage from damage.

Frequently asked questions
Which breeds are best for beginners
Miniature versions of popular breeds and lines without extreme feather length are more forgiving to keep and winterize.
Can decorative chickens live with standard utility birds
Yes if there is enough space and zoning, but long-feathered and crested breeds do better with a separate run to prevent feather damage.
Do they need special supplements
Yes. For plumage and shell quality, ensure amino acids, B-vitamins, biotin, zinc and calcium – use poultry premixes suitable for ornamental lines.
