Description of the species
The Red-winged Parrot (Aprosmictus erythropterus) is a member of Psittaculidae with a body length of 32–33 cm, about 13 cm of which is the tail. Males show a bright green head, a darker green mantle, and green underparts; the forewing is vivid red, while the tail and long primaries are green. Females are duller overall; the green wing feathers carry a red edging, and the rump and lower back show a bluish tone. In both sexes, the bill ranges from red to orange.
Range and habitat
Occurs in northern, northeastern and eastern Australia, and in the south of New Guinea. Habitats include coastal forests, forest edges, acacia groves, savannas and mangroves, typically near water.
Life and diet
Usually seen in pairs or small groups. The diet consists of eucalypt and acacia seeds, berries, flowers and insects.
Breeding
Nests in tree cavities up to about 11 m above ground. The clutch is 2–6 white eggs; the hen incubates for roughly 3 weeks. The cock forages in the morning and daytime to feed the incubating hen. Fledging occurs after 5–6 weeks, and parents continue feeding the young for about another month.
Care in captivity
Popular among bird keepers for a calm disposition and striking coloration. Provide a spacious aviary or large cage, varied perches, environmental enrichment, a high-quality diet and constant access to fresh water.
Taxonomy and subspecies
Two subspecies are recognized: A. e. coccineopterus (Gould, 1865) and A. e. erythropterus (Gmelin, 1788).
