Species description
The Grey Partridge (Perdix perdix) is a widespread ground-dwelling bird in the partridge genus. The body is rounded, length 28–32 cm. Upperparts are mottled brown, with rufous flanks and tail; most birds show a dark horseshoe patch on the pale belly (less distinct in females). Bill and legs are dark, no tarsal spurs. Males are only slightly brighter, so sexual dimorphism is modest.
Origin and evolution
Fossil relatives include Perdix palaeoperdix from the early and late Pleistocene of southern Europe and Perdix margaritae from the late Pliocene of Transbaikalia and northern Mongolia. These are considered sister taxa rather than direct ancestors of the modern Grey Partridge.
Range
Occurs across the temperate zone of Eurasia: nearly all of Europe, Asia Minor, Kazakhstan and southern West Siberia — from the British Isles and Scandinavia to the Altai and Tuva. In Scandinavia and Finland it reaches about 66°N, in Karelia ~65°N; eastward the range extends to the lower Ili River. It has been introduced to the USA and Canada.
Habitats include herb-rich steppe with shrubs and woodland patches, forest-steppe, edges and clear-cuts, gullies, fallows and grain fields; in mountains it can reach subalpine meadows.
Lifestyle
Sedentary and tied to open landscapes, it spends most time on the ground. Strong legs make it a fast runner; it flies reluctantly, usually only when threatened. Diet is mainly seeds and green plant matter, while chicks in summer take large amounts of insects.
Nests are shallow ground scrapes concealed by vegetation or under tussocks. In late May to early June the female lays 12–24 eggs, typically one per day; incubation lasts 24–25 days. Downy chicks are mobile immediately, begin short flights after about two weeks and soon become fully volant.
In autumn and winter birds form coveys, often feeding near stacks and threshing floors and sometimes close to buildings. In harsh spells they approach settlements. The male’s call is a loud, harsh crowing; the female clucks.
Importance and conservation
The Grey Partridge is a notable quarry species valued for tender meat. It is also beneficial in agro-landscapes by consuming crop pests and weed seeds and cleaning up spilled grains. Many regions manage populations through acclimatization and supportive measures.

Frequently asked questions
What should I feed Grey Partridges at home?
Provide mixed grains for galliforms, greens and vegetables, a mineral supplement, and constant access to clean water. Live protein is useful for chicks in summer.
Can they be housed with other galliforms?
Prefer separate housing or spacious aviaries with cover: the species is territorial in the breeding season and may conflict with neighbors.
When do pairs form and where should nests be placed?
Pairs form in spring. Offer secluded, dry spots with dense grass or simple ground-level shelters.
