Description of the species
The Alexandrine Parakeet (Psittacula eupatria) is the largest of the ring-necked parakeets. Total length is 45–58 cm including the tail. Plumage is grass-green with a slight bluish cast on the crown. A maroon shoulder patch is present; a narrow black frontal line crosses the forehead, and black “moustache” lines run from the lower mandible along the lower edge of the cheeks. Adult males develop a broad collar (“ring”): pink on the nape transitioning to black along the sides of the neck to the lower mandible (“tie”), typically appearing around 18 months. Females and immatures lack the ring. The bill is large and bright red (carrot-colored in juveniles).
Range and habitat
Native to South Asia (India, Pakistan, eastern Afghanistan, Iran, Sri Lanka and the Andaman Islands) with occurrences in parts of Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos). It occupies the upper canopy of tropical forests and rarely descends to the ground.
Life and behavior
Like other ring-necked parakeets it is a strong flier, though routine flights are typically short. Birds spend most time in tree canopies, foraging and moving in flocks; they are active and vocal.
Breeding
Nests in tree cavities. The usual clutch is 2–4 eggs. The hen incubates for 23–24 days while the cock feeds her and guards the nest. Young begin to appear at the cavity entrance around 6 weeks and fledge by ~7 weeks. Juvenile plumage resembles the female’s, with a duller overall green. The male’s ring starts to show at ~1.5 years and becomes bright and complete after the molt by year three.
Care in captivity
Kept as an aviary/cage bird since antiquity (depictions date back to Ancient Rome). Valued for a gentle disposition and striking appearance. Vocal mimicry varies by individual: some learn dozens of words, more commonly 10–15 with steady training. With proper husbandry they are long-lived.
Taxonomy and subspecies
Five subspecies are recognized, differing in size and plumage details: P. e. avensis, P. e. eupatria, P. e. magnirostris, P. e. nipalensis, P. e. siamensis.
