Group overview

Parrots are members of the order Psittaciformes noted for vivid plumage, a strong hooked bill, and in some species a prominent crest. Many can imitate sounds and human speech using the syrinx, tongue and bill. Flight ability varies widely: some species are strong fliers, others spend more time climbing branches, often using the bill as a “third foot”.

Parrot as a pet

For home care, choose a rectangular, spacious cage that lets the bird turn freely and hang upside down without touching perches or accessories. Ideal temperature is 18-22 °C. Place the cage away from heaters, direct sun and drafts, at human eye level, and out of reach of other pets.

Adaptation

Right after purchase, minimize stress: quiet environment, muted colors, familiar treats, calm voice. Introduce family members gradually. The person the bird responds to most readily should lead early bonding and handling.

Communication and basic training

Parrots are social and need daily interaction. Use short, regular sessions with positive reinforcement to shape simple actions and sounds. Enrich the cage with swings, wooden rings, safe toys and a mirror.

Bill and behavior

The powerful hooked bill is used to obtain and process food, for self-defense, and for locomotion while climbing. Active species combine flight with agile climbing during daily activity.

Diet

Feed in the morning at a consistent time. Size the daily portion so food is consumed within 24 hours. Base diet on grass and grain mixes of millet, oats, corn, sunflower seed and hemp seed. In winter add sprouted grains, leafy greens and vitamin-rich items: vegetables and fruits, optionally mixed with small pieces of plain white bread crust. Periodically replace dry mixes with soft foods: unsalted wheat, rice or oat porridge, low-fat cottage cheese and a hard-boiled egg.

Mineral supplements are essential: cuttlebone or mineral block, clean charcoal, and safe branches (willow, poplar, rowan, aspen). A few drops of lemon juice can be added to drinking water. Ripe fruits and nectar-like mixes work as occasional treats. Water must be fresh at all times.

Hygiene and care

Monthly deep clean: remove the bird, empty and wash the tray, replace or rinse sand/gravel, scald the cage with boiling water, and spot-clean with infusions of St John’s wort or chamomile. Every 3 months do a sanitary wipe-down with a mild baking-soda solution over all cage parts and accessories.

Common questions

What cage is best for a parrot

A rectangular cage with ample width, several perches of varied diameter, safe toys and a swing. Place it at eye level, away from drafts and radiators.

What treats are good and what to avoid

Good: sprouts, leafy salads, carrot, apple, a few berries. Avoid: salt, sugar, chocolate, avocado, alcohol, coffee, fried or spicy foods.

Can I keep a single parrot

Yes, if you provide daily interaction. If that is not possible, consider housing a compatible pair for social needs.
