Description of the species
The Superb Parrot (Polytelis swainsonii) is a slender Australian parrot about 40 cm long, with a 20–22 cm tail. Base plumage is bright green. Throat, chin, cheeks and forehead are yellow, with a broad red transverse band across the throat. Iris is orange, the bill is red to red-yellow. Females are duller and typically lack the red throat band.
Range and habitat
Occurs in south-eastern Australia. Inhabits riverine eucalypt forests and also uses human-modified landscapes such as orchards, gardens and parks.
Behaviour and diet
Spends most time in tree canopies, regularly visiting edges and homesteads. Feeds on seeds of wild and cultivated plants (nettle, shepherd’s purse, thistle, geranium, wheat, alfalfa and others) and on nectar of flowering eucalypts.
Breeding
Nests in tree hollows. Typical clutch 4–5 eggs incubated by the female. Chicks hatch after about 3 weeks. Fledging occurs at roughly 7 weeks, with an additional ~14 days of parental feeding.
Care in captivity
Popular for its striking colours and calm temperament. Best kept in roomy aviaries or large flights. Young birds tame readily, can learn a few words, whistle simple tunes and mimic other birds and animals.

Keepers who can provide a spacious aviary, varied diet and daily interaction. As a “talker” it is moderate.

Preferably above-freezing temperatures without sharp fluctuations, a dry draft-free room and access to a bath.

Seed mixes for medium parrots, sprouts, fresh greens and vegetables, fruit in moderation, mineral supplements and browse. Fresh water at all times.
