Species description
Scaled Quail (Callipepla squamata) is a medium-sized, ground-dwelling galliform with bluish-brown plumage and the hallmark “scaled” look on the breast and neck created by dark feather edging. A neat crest tops the head. The species is a noted gamebird in several U.S. states, valued for tight holding and strong flushes under pointing dogs.
Range and habitat
Its native range runs from south-central Arizona, northern New Mexico, eastern Colorado, and southwestern Kansas south through western Oklahoma and west-central Texas into Mexico, reaching northeastern Jalisco, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Hidalgo, and western Tamaulipas. It has been introduced to Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and within the U.S. to Hawaii, central Washington, eastern Nevada, and Nebraska; self-sustaining populations are mainly in central Washington and eastern Nevada.
Scaled quail prefer dry, open landscapes: valleys, plains, foothills, rocky slopes, ditches, washes, and canyons with a mosaic of bare ground, low grasses, and scattered shrubs. Optimal habitat typically has 10–50% ground cover, low herbaceous growth, and shrubs around 2 m high. They avoid dense riparian growth. Summer use areas are often far from open water; in winter birds shift closer to farms and ranches. Radio-tag studies report individual home ranges of roughly 21–24 ha.
Subspecies
- C. s. squamata — nominotypical Altiplano form on Mexico’s Central Plateau.
- C. s. pallida — Northern scaled quail, the most widespread in the U.S. (AZ, NM, CO, W OK, W TX, N Chihuahua, Sonora); paler than the nominate.
- C. s. hargravei — Upper Sonoran desert form, localized near the CO–KS–OK corner and NW New Mexico; the palest, adapted to dry, sandy habitats.
- C. s. castanogastris — South Texas (from Eagle Pass and San Antonio) into NE Mexico; darker overall with a distinctive chestnut belly.
