Species description

Quails (Coturnix) are a small genus of galliform birds in the pheasant family. They are compact ground-dwelling birds with rounded bodies, short pointed wings, and a very short tail largely covered by the upper tail coverts. The tarsi are unfeathered and spurless; the bill is small and stout, with open nares.

Range and distribution

Members of the genus occur across the Old World except the High Arctic. In Europe, the wild species is the Common Quail Coturnix coturnix. Other species are native to South and East Asia, Africa, and Australia.

Behavior and diet

Quails stay on the ground in tall grass, fallows, and fields. They run swiftly and flush abruptly, usually for short distances. Their call is sharp and rather monotonous. The diet includes small seeds and green plant matter; invertebrates are especially important during chick rearing.

Breeding

Depending on conditions they may be monogamous or polygamous. The nest is a shallow scrape on the ground sparsely lined with grass and leaves. Clutches are typically large. Chicks are precocial and become independent quickly.

Classification

The genus Coturnix belongs to the tribe Coturnicini within the pheasants. It includes several extant species (one extinct in historical times) plus a number of Holocene fossil forms described from subfossil remains.

  • C. coturnix — Common quail
  • C. japonica — Japanese (domestic) quail
  • C. coromandelica — Black-breasted quail
  • C. delegorguei — Harlequin quail
  • C. pectoralis — Australian quail
  • C. novaezelandiae — New Zealand quail

Frequently asked questions

What housing conditions do quails need

A dry, warm, draft-free space; age-appropriate stocking density; balanced feed with adequate protein; constant access to clean water and mineral supplements.

Can quails be kept with other domestic birds

Better separately. Quails are stress-sensitive and do best in dedicated cages or aviaries with their own feeders and drinkers.
