Description of the species
The Regent Parrot (Polytelis anthopeplus) is a medium-sized Australian parrot. Total length about 40 cm, tail up to 20 cm. Males are bright yellow overall with an olive-yellow upper body, black remiges and rectrices, a distinct red transverse wing bar, and a red bill. Females are olive-green with darker green upper tail and a paler red bill. Sexual dimorphism is obvious from the first adult plumage.
Range and habitat
Native to south-eastern and south-western Australia. Western populations make extensive use of agro-landscapes and gardens, while south-eastern birds more often occupy sparsely populated shrub savannas, open steppe and foothills. Occurs in montane areas up to roughly 3000 m a.s.l.
Behaviour
Usually in pairs or small groups, spending most time in the canopy and descending to the ground to feed. Near settlements may visit farms and feeders. When disturbed it is notably wary and skittish.
Breeding
Nests in tree hollows. Typical clutch 3–6 eggs, incubation about 3 weeks. Fledging occurs at 42–49 days, a period when juveniles are especially timid. In good conditions, repeat nesting attempts within the same season are possible.
Care in captivity
Common in aviculture. The call is sharp and loud, so outdoor aviaries are preferable where vocalisations are less disturbing. The species is relatively cold-hardy and, in mild climates, can live year-round in an outdoor aviary with shelter from wind and precipitation. With space and a balanced diet it breeds readily.
Taxonomy
Two subspecies are recognised: P. a. anthopeplus (Lear, 1831) and P. a. monarchoides (Schodde, 1993).

Common questions
Do I need heating in an outdoor aviary
In mild winters a windproof shelter and dry bedding are sufficient. With sustained subzero temperatures, provide local heat and a draft-free night box.
How can I reduce noise
Provide a spacious aviary, visual barriers, regular enrichment and a stable routine. Avoid cramped cages and frequent stressors.
What is the base diet
Quality mixes for medium parrots with moderate sunflower, millet and oats, supplemented with sprouts, greens, vegetables and fruits, mineral additives and always fresh water.
