Description of the species

Swans (Cygnus) are large waterfowl in the duck family Anatidae. Males are usually larger than females. Depending on species, wingspan reaches roughly 1.5-3.1 m and body mass in the largest species can exceed 12 kg. The body is robust, the neck is very long and flexible - this lets swans feed in deeper water by submerging the head and neck. Most species are white; some are gray or black. Juveniles are typically brownish-gray with dark legs. Wings are long and broad; legs are relatively short, so gait on land appears clumsy. The bill is elongated and flattened with visible lamellae along the edges.

The plumage is dense and water-repellent thanks to a well-developed uropygial gland that secretes oily wax. Subcutaneous fat provides insulation and varies with species, season and condition. Swans are typical precocial, brood-rearing birds - both parents raise the young, often guarding them for 1-2 years. Molting occurs twice a year: a complete summer molt and a partial autumn-winter molt.

Etymology

The Latin cygnus derives from Ancient Greek κύκνος. In Classical Latin the common word for swan was olor. The Slavic root for “swan” is related to Indo-European terms for “white.”

Biology and diet

In shallow water swans submerge their necks and probe the mud, pulling up rhizomes and young shoots of aquatic plants while also taking small aquatic animals. Chicks initially feed more on aquatic larvae and invertebrates, gradually shifting toward plant material. Peak foraging usually occurs in the morning and evening.

Classification of genus Cygnus

  • Black Swan (Cygnus atratus)
  • Black-necked Swan (Cygnus melanocoryphus)
  • Mute Swan (Cygnus olor)
  • Trumpeter Swan (Cygnus buccinator)
  • Tundra Swan (Cygnus columbianus)
  • Whooper Swan (Cygnus cygnus)

Coscoroba (Coscoroba) is sometimes mistaken for a swan, but is taxonomically closer to ducks and geese.

Fossil forms

Paleontology records several fossil swans from the Miocene to Pleistocene of Eurasia and North America, including Cygnus csakvarensis, C. mariae, C. verae, C. falconeri, C. paloregonus, C. equitum and others.

Common questions

Which swan species are most common in decorative ponds

Mute Swans and Black Swans are popular choices. The best option depends on pond size and quality, climate and owner experience.

Do swans require a large water body

A spacious pond with clean water and gently sloping banks is preferable. Provide a safe shoreline resting area and wind shelter.

What supplemental foods are suitable besides natural vegetation

Specialized waterfowl pellets, grain mixes and leafy greens. Avoid feeding large amounts of bread - it harms metabolism and water quality.

How do swans cope with molt

Summer molt is complete and starts with the replacement of primaries - during this time birds temporarily lose flight and need a calm, protected environment.
