Species overview
Sandgrouse (Pterocles) are a genus of birds in the family Pteroclididae and the order Pteroclidiformes. Historically they were placed with pigeons, but modern systematics treats sandgrouse as a distinct order. They are adapted to arid habitats across Southern Europe, Asia, and North Africa, with a seed-based diet.
Sandgrouse differ from the related genus Syrrhaptes by foot structure: Pterocles have four separate, bare toes, whereas Syrrhaptes have feathered toes, the outer toe partly fused with the middle one, and no hind toe.
Appearance
The upperparts of most species are cryptically mottled in grays, ochres, and browns for ground camouflage. Males often show brighter underparts. Black-bellied sandgrouse (P. orientalis) have a black belly, a black band dividing the ochre breast from the throat, and a dark triangular throat patch edged rufous. Pin-tailed or white-bellied sandgrouse (P. alchata) show two black transverse bands across the throat and breast and a dark patch below the bill.
Range and ecology
Sandgrouse inhabit dry steppe and semi-desert, favoring open terrain. In Southern Europe two species occur: black-bellied (P. orientalis) from the Iberian Peninsula and Northwest Africa through Southwest and Central Asia, and pin-tailed or white-bellied (P. alchata) in Southwest Europe, North Africa, Southwest Asia, and the Aral-Caspian lowlands. They feed mainly on the ground on seeds and shoots and typically commute to water at dawn and dusk.
Taxonomy
The International Ornithologists’ Union recognizes 14 species of Pterocles, including P. orientalis (black-bellied), P. alchata (pin-tailed or white-bellied), P. senegallus (lanner or desert), P. namaqua (Namaqua), P. exustus (chestnut-bellied or Senegal), P. bicinctus (double-banded or night), P. decoratus (black-faced), P. gutturalis (yellow-throated) and others.
Brief note on harvest and protection
In regions with hunting pressure, sandgrouse are very wary and visit water at low light. We support responsible wildlife practices and recommend following local conservation rules and seasons.

Frequently asked questions
Are sandgrouse kept in captivity
Rarely, due to specialized ecology and transport stress. If available, they need large dry aviaries with sandy substrate, cover, and a calm environment.
What to feed
Primarily fine mixed grains with added greens and mineral supplements. Fresh water must be available at all times.
