Species description
The Asian Chukar, or Chukar Partridge (Alectoris chukar), is a ground-dwelling bird in the pheasant family. Slightly larger than a jackdaw: body length about 35 cm, mass 350–800 g, wingspan 47–52 cm. Plumage is mainly grey; a black band runs from the forehead through the eye and encircles the throat. Bill, peri-orbital ring and legs are bright red. Females are smaller than males and typically lack spurs.
Range
Occurs across mountain systems from the Balkans east to the Himalayas and China. Successfully introduced and established in parts of the USA (e.g., Nevada, New Mexico), New Zealand, the Hawaiian Islands and South Africa. Occupies arid slopes, rocky steppe, desert margins and forest edges up to 4,600 m a.s.l.
Vocalization
A loud, accelerating series of clucking notes transcribed as “kok, kok, kok, kok-kok-kok”.
Breeding
Noted for high fecundity. The female lays 7–22 eggs in a ground nest; incubation lasts about 24 days. Chukars can breed in their first year.
Diet
In summer they take both plant matter and invertebrates; in winter the diet is predominantly plant-based (seeds, buds and green parts).
Significance and husbandry
Frequently kept in captivity for their hardiness and low maintenance. With proper care, lifespan in household/aviary conditions can reach up to 20 years.
