Species description

Partridges (Perdix) are a genus of ground-dwelling birds in the pheasant subfamily, closely related to the tribe Phasianini. Medium-sized game birds, they are traditional targets of sport and commercial hunting. Three species are recognized in the genus.

Origin and evolution

Two prehistoric species are known from fossils: P. palaeoperdix and P. margaritae. P. palaeoperdix was widespread in Southern Europe during the Pleistocene and formed an important part of Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal diets; modern literature often treats it as a probable ancestor of the Grey Partridge (P. perdix). P. margaritae is described from the Late Pliocene of Transbaikalia and northern Mongolia.

Appearance

Compact body; bill and legs dark. Upperparts are mottled brown, with rufous flanks and tail. No tarsal spurs. Sexual dimorphism is weak: females are generally paler.

Distribution

The primary range covers the temperate zone of Eurasia. The Grey Partridge has been introduced to North America and occurs in the USA and Canada.

Ecology and habits

Sedentary birds of open landscapes—fields, steppes, and edges. Diet is mainly seeds and plant matter, with insects added in summer. Nests are shallow ground scrapes concealed in grass or shrubs.

Conservation status

Overall, the three species are not globally threatened, but Grey and Daurian (Bearded) Partridges have locally declined due to hunting pressure and agricultural change. The Grey Partridge’s range has contracted in some regions; the subspecies P. perdix italica is considered extinct circa 1990. The Tibetan Partridge remains relatively secure thanks to expansive, hard-to-access habitats on the Tibetan Plateau.

Classification

  • Grey Partridge — Perdix perdix
  • Daurian (Bearded) Partridge — Perdix dauurica
  • Tibetan Partridge — Perdix hodgsoniae

Grey and Daurian Partridges are closely related and sometimes treated as a superspecies. The Tibetan Partridge differs by a bold black-and-white facial pattern, black barring on the chest, and 16 tail feathers versus 18 in the other two.
