Description of the genus
Peafowl (Pavo) are large galliform birds in the pheasant subfamily. Unlike most pheasants with a roof-shaped tail, peafowl display a flat “tail” in the broad sense: the spectacular fan is formed by elongated upper tail coverts that are often mistaken for the true tail feathers. The male’s eye-spotted display and courtship make peafowl one of the most iconic ornamental birds.
Classification
The genus Pavo belongs to the tribe Pavonini within Phasianinae. Two species are recognized: the Indian or common peafowl (P. cristatus) and the green peafowl (P. muticus). The black-shouldered peafowl is treated as a domestic color morph of P. cristatus. In Africa, the related but distinct genus Afropavo contains the Congo peafowl.
Range and ecology
Asian peafowl originate in South and Southeast Asia, occupying forests, woodland edges and agro-mosaic landscapes with access to water and cover. In captivity they are widely bred and domesticated, with numerous ornamental color morphs established.
Tail morphology
The characteristic train of the male is formed by greatly elongated upper tail coverts bearing eyespots. The true rectrices are shorter and act as a support during display. Males fan, vibrate and angle the train toward the hen during courtship.
Genetics and hybridization
Peafowl and Afropavo share a similar karyotype (2n=76), reflecting close relationship. In captivity, “Spalding” hybrids between P. cristatus and P. muticus are common and generally fertile. Most deposited genetic sequences in public databases pertain to P. cristatus, the best-studied species.
Art and symbolism
Peafowl appear across Eastern and Western art and symbolism: an attribute of Juno in antiquity, an emblem of immortality and Resurrection in Christian iconography, and a symbol of royalty in Persia and India. In the 20th century, stylized peafowl figures became notable elements in branding and visual identity.

Common questions
How do Indian and green peafowl differ
P. cristatus shows a pronounced crest and vivid blue neck. P. muticus is larger with a green-bronze metallic neck and a different crest shape, and it is generally more demanding in husbandry.
What is a “Spalding” peafowl
A captive-bred hybrid between Indian and green peafowl. Appearance varies, and the offspring are fertile, but breeders typically keep hybrid lines separate from pure varieties.
What housing conditions are recommended
A spacious, dry aviary with high perches, shelter and shade, protected from drafts. Feed a quality pheasant ration with greens, grain and mineral supplements, and provide constant access to clean water.
