Species description

Doves (Streptopelia) are a genus of pigeons; the name derives from Greek for “collar” and “dove.” These are small to medium pigeons up to 30 cm long and weighing roughly 100–150 g. They build open, flat nests of twigs on trees and, in settlements, on building ledges and other structures.

Distribution and habitats

Species in this genus are widespread across Eurasia and Africa. Many adapt readily to human-modified landscapes—cities, towns, parks, and gardens. For the Laughing Dove, urban areas are often the primary habitat. Since the 1930s the Eurasian Collared Dove has expanded from the Near East and the Balkans across Europe and Central Asia, typically colonizing anthropogenic environments. Several species have been introduced by people, including Laughing and Spotted Doves in regions such as Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Mauritius, and Réunion.

Ecology and life history

Doves adapt quickly to living near people, readily finding food and nest sites in cultural landscapes. Nests are shallow twig platforms placed on trees or man-made structures. Diet is mainly plant-based; in towns they frequently visit feeders. The Laughing Dove is widely kept as a cage bird; in some sources its domestic form is treated as a pet lineage derived from a wild species.

Taxonomic notes

According to the International Ornithologists’ Union, Streptopelia includes 15 species, such as the European Turtle Dove, Dusky, Andaman, Oriental Turtle Dove, Island Collared, Eurasian Collared, Red-eyed, Cape, Vinaceous, and Red Turtle Doves. Molecular studies split several former members into the genera Spilopelia (Spotted and Laughing Doves) and Nesoenas (Madagascar Turtle Dove and Pink Pigeon). Some sources treat the domestic Laughing Dove (Streptopelia risoria) as a domestic form of a closely related wild species.

Within Russia, five species are regularly recorded: Eurasian Collared, Red Turtle, European Turtle, Oriental Turtle Dove, and Laughing Dove.
