Description

Red-winged Parrot (Aprosmictus erythropterus)

The Red-winged Parrot - a bird species from the Psittaculidae family. Body length 32–33 cm, tail 13 cm. Males have a bright green head, upper back green with a dark tint, and lower body green. The front part of the wings is red, tail and long flight feathers are green. Females are duller: the green wing feathers have red edging, the rump and lower back are bluish. The beak can range from red to orange in both sexes.

Distribution and Habitat

Inhabits coastal forests, clearings, acacia groves, savannas, and mangrove thickets. Lives in pairs or small groups near water sources.

Diet

Feeds on seeds of eucalyptus and acacia, berries, flowers, and insects.

Breeding

Nests in tree hollows up to 11 m high. The female lays 2–6 white eggs and incubates them for about 3 weeks. During incubation, the male provides food for the female. Chicks fledge after 5–6 weeks, but parents continue feeding them for about another month.
