Guinea Pigeon (Columba guinea)

The Guinea, or speckled pigeon (Latin: Columba guinea), is a bird species of the pigeon family, widely distributed in Africa south of the Sahara. It is recognized by its large white wing spots and red bare skin around the eyes, distinguishing it from other pigeons. The species inhabits open landscapes and urban areas, avoiding dense forests.

Appearance

A large dark pigeon with prominent white spots on the shoulders and red bare skin around the eyes. In flight, a grey band is visible on the tail and upper tail coverts.

Distribution

Found throughout most open areas of Africa south of the Sahara, as well as in urban environments. Avoids dense forest regions.

Breeding habits and behaviour

Builds large nests, usually on rocks or in urban structures, and lays two eggs. Its call includes a characteristic “rrrour” and accelerating “hoo-hoo” sounds. Distinguished from common rock pigeons and other Columba species by its unique coloration and behaviour.
