Description

Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus)

The budgerigar - a small member of the Psittaculidae family and the only species in the genus Melopsittacus. One of the most widespread and well-known parrots in the world, well-adapted both to life in the wild and in human care.

Appearance

The body length of a budgerigar is typically 17–20 cm, with exhibition forms reaching 21–23 cm. Wing length is 9.5–10.5 cm, tail length 8–10 cm, and weight 40–45 g. The wild form has grass-green plumage with a yellow "mask" and characteristic wavy patterns on the nape and back. Purple cheek patches and three black throat spots on each side are distinctive. The tail is long, stepped, and visually elongates the bird's silhouette.

Sexual Dimorphism

Sex is easily determined by the cere. In young males, it is purple; in adults, bright blue. In females, the cere ranges from blue to brown. Male forehead feathers fluoresce in the ultraviolet spectrum, serving as a signal during mate selection.

Structure and Adaptations

The beak is strong and mobile, with the upper mandible connected to the skull by a flexible joint, allowing it to efficiently grasp and crush food, as well as use the beak for climbing. The zygodactyl feet (two toes forward, two back) provide a secure grip on branches and objects.

Range and Habitat

The budgerigar's natural range includes Australia and nearby islands. It inhabits semi-deserts, grasslands, and open woodland areas with scattered trees. Birds roam in search of water and grass seeds, capable of covering long distances in fast, arched flight. Nesting mainly occurs in the more arid interior regions of the continent.

Lifestyle and Behavior

Budgerigars are highly social birds, forming flocks ranging from several dozen to hundreds of individuals. They are very active and "talkative," using a variety of vocalizations for communication and alarm signals. They move well on the ground and skillfully climb branches and cage bars, actively using their beaks.
