Blue Eared Pheasant

Blue Eared Pheasant (Crossoptilon auritum)

The Blue Eared Pheasant is a large member of the pheasant family, often exceeding 96 cm in total length. Its plumage is predominantly gray-blue, with a dark purple "crown" and black cap on the head. A bright red bare patch on the face contrasts sharply with the long white ear-tufts on both sides of the head. The bill and elongated neck feathers are white, adding to its striking appearance.

Range and Habitat

This species is native to the mountainous forests of central China. It inhabits high-altitude and foothill forests with a mix of clearings and shrub-covered slopes, favoring areas with sparse tree cover combined with dense undergrowth.

Ecology and Feeding

One of the largest and highest-altitude pheasants in China, the Blue Eared Pheasant feeds mainly on plant matter and berries, foraging both on the ground and within the understory.

Sexual Dimorphism

Males and females appear quite similar: gray-blue plumage, black cap, vivid red facial patch, and long white "ears." Sexual differences are subtle compared to many other pheasant species.
