Splendid Mountain Parrot (Polytelis anthopeplus)
The Splendid Mountain Parrot is a medium-sized Australian species. Body length reaches about 40 cm, with a tail up to 20 cm. Males are striking with bright yellow plumage, olive-yellow back, black tail and flight feathers, a red wing bar, and a red beak. Females display an olive-green coloration, darker tail, and a pale red beak. Sexual dimorphism is noticeable from the first adult molt.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to southeastern and southwestern Australia. Western populations are often found in agricultural landscapes and near homesteads, while southeastern birds prefer sparsely populated shrub savannas, plains, and foothills. Occurs in mountainous areas up to ~3000 m above sea level.
Behavior and Lifestyle
Usually found in pairs or small groups, spending most of the time in tree canopies, descending to the ground for feeding. Near human settlements, they may visit farm fields and feeders. Exhibits caution and wariness when disturbed.
Classification
The species has two recognized subspecies: P. a. anthopeplus (Lear, 1831) and P. a. monarchoides (Schodde, 1993).
